26th May Games

Busy last night; Andy P ran a Core Space game for Mark, Steve S and Bob (one of our Friday night gamers who put in an appearance); I gather the body count was high and consisted mostly of players!

Rob ran a sci-fi skirmish using the house 'dungeon' system - might try using that with a Space Hulk game some time.

Mike had the idea to refight the battle of Hastings to the East of the Abbey site, where the road to London follows a ridge through marshy terrain (confirmed by archeological survey some years back). If this is correct, then King Harold Godwinson was killed on a mini roundabout . . . I provided the Norman forces and commanded the cavalry, while Steve H took the assault infantry and missile troops. Long story short, after some missile fire, infantry melees and a brace of successful cavalry charges, the English forces were reduced to a shadow of their former selves. Seems as though Duke William may be due for a promotion.

Next week a board game session is planned. I'd like to run a final familiarisation game for the Battle of Britain game which will be presented at the Broadside show on the 4th June.

11th May Games

We are operating in different parts of Wayland from one another last night; Alan and Rob were involved in a Warcry game in the bar area, while Steve H ran his new boardgame based on the movie 'The Thing' (John Carpenter version for those in the know) for myself, Paul, Steve S, Mark, Dave K and Andy P, in the main area.

This was a first outing for the game and understandably things (pun intended) took a while to get going. I suspect this will run better on another occasion, but the paranoia levels were VERY high by the time we finished!

Next week, Dave K is running a Mad Dog with Guns gangster game; I wouldn't mind trying the 'Waterloo - Quelle Affair!" board game I picked up a while back as I've only played it once to date.

4th May Games

Shortage of players meant that the game of The Things has been rescheduled to next week. Accordingly, Steves S and H and Dave K played Quartermaster General Cold War instead; I'm told that Pravda will publish this as a great victory for the USSR (no further comment).

I'd been trying to meet up with Mike C for a Napoleonic naval game for quite a while; since he was available last night and had two friends looking for a game (both named Steve) we set up a game for our respective British and Dutch forces and set to, using my rules which had been developed over an extended period from a magazine article. It all got predictably messy with a number of ships on both sides sustaining damage, but the Dutch had a ship strike it's colours so might have come off worse overall.

Rob played Necromunda with a staff member due to Alan not being available.

As noted above, plans are afoot to play The Thing boardgame next week; this can handle up to eight players so there should be room for all. I'm running a final test game for the Battle of Britain show game this weekend and I note that the organisers of the Broadside show have given the game a mention on their Facebook page.

27th April Games

A lively atmosphere at Waylands last night! For our part, Dave K ran a game of The Walking Dead for Steve S, Paul, Mark and Andy P. Alan and Rob were engaged in their customary Warcry Session, and Steve H and I played a Memoir 44 Eastern Front scenario. As is the custom with Richard Borg games, your actions are governed by the hand of ards you hold which in turn permit actions in the three areas of the board. The Soviets are hampered still further by the use of the Commissar card which forces the Soviet player to select his next action card at the end of his previous move! I played the Soviets and was lucky enough to cover all the German actions and in doing so won the scenario (even I get lucky some times. . .). Mike C was also onsite with Steve's B & B playing Lords of Waterdeep, so we had a chat.

Next week, we are playing Steve H's new board game based on the horro movie "The Thing" and I'll bring along my Napoleonic naval ships.
