2rnd July Games

 Considerably more comfortable yesterday evening with a change in the weather; Steve S ran the planned Aliens games for Steve H, Eddie, Nigel, Mark, Paul and Andy P, while I laid on the Napoleonic Travel battle game for Nick. Dave C was invited to join in but had to leave.

I kept an eye on the Aliens game, and can confirm that all of the Sulaco's crew (together with Newt) made it off planet before the Big Bang. For my part, Nick and I swapped sides and he took the British while I ran the French this time. Nick had to depart before a full result could be obtained, but I had been able to knock out most of the British cavalry and threatened their left flank badly. Kapok 'smoke' added for effect.

Next week, plans for a BattleTech game are afoot, and I'll bring the Travel Battle again, hopefully with a completed Prussian force to try out.

28th May Games

Various people absent, but we had the welcome return of Bob P, who has been absent for some time and was invited to attend by Andy P (no relation). Andy ran a Wild West themed Zombiecide game, while Nick and I gave a run out for my long delayed Travel Battle game.

This was originally devised by Mike Perry for use on long journeys, but was developed for the market and released in 2017. The game comes with two boards and sufficient generic Napoleonic figures for two armies, which fight using a simple but effective set of rules. I took the British and Nick took the French (figures are 8mm high but clearly identifiable) and we set to. Suffice to say that since we were both using my dice, for once they took my part and Nick conceded with most of his forces lost.

Next week, I've offered to run an Angels 20 game, and Mark is running a SWAT game.

Cavalier 2025

Steve H, Graham and I (with assistance from Nick on his arrival) ran 'An affair of Outposts' which is a Peninsular War based game of two linked scenarios with the French trying to break a British outpost line, leading to a larger scale encounter as the outposts fall back on their supports. The French (commanded by Graham and Nick) suffered truly appalling dice rolls (since they used my dice AGAIN!) and failed in their objectives. It is said that dice have no memory, but boy do they have malice......

That said, the game was well received by the visiting public and there was a lot of interest in the Rebels and Patriots rules and the Flags and Eagles Napoleonic module published online, which forms the basis of our version of the rules played. My thanks as ever to Steve, Graham and Nick for attending and making the game work as well as it did. The scenarios played out well, so this game is one for another outing in the future.

23rd August Games

   A reasonable turnout last night, even if we were scattered around the Wayland Games Centre. Dave K, Steve S, Paul, Andy P, Mark and Eddie were involved in a Walking Dead campaign game in the bar area, Rob and Alan were playing the Stargrave sci-fi rules from Osprey along Steve H and myself. My game brought out the Napoleonic naval collection for a refight of the Battle of San Domingo in 1806, when a French squadron was destroyed in the West Indies. The layout for the game didn’t quite match the reality, and the French under Steve did rather better than was the case in reality. I pulled victory from defeat not by preventing the French squadron from escaping, but  when the British flagship blew up after suffering catastrophic damage, it inflicted so much damage on the surrounding French ships that they couldn’t evade the pursuing British! You take your wins any way you can...............  

 

   I understand a further Walking Dead game is planned for next week. I won’t be down for a couple of weeks, but I’ll see you all in mid September. If someone could update the Facebook page in my absence, I’d be most grateful.

19th October Games

   A reduced attendance due to a mix of sickness and holidays still managed to provide a choice of games last night. Mike was re-introducing his brother to the hobby after a long lay off with a Lord of the Rings game. Rob and Alan were involved in a Marvel Crisis Protocol (think I got this right) game and I ran a Napoleonic naval game for Matt and Mark. Matt was fortunate to smash his way to a win with the French against Mark and the British (but don't worry, I won't let this go to his head). I umpired the game, and spent time advertising the Battle of Britain game from SELWG to people who might be interested in taking part in some of our games.

   Mike is running a refight of Agincourt next week (albeit on the day after the anniversary). I hope to be able to take part, but this will depend on how my car's MOT and service progress earlier in the day.

22rnd June Games

 We were busy last night; Dave K ran a Mad Dogs with Guns game for Matt, Mark, Andy P and Steve S, Alan and Rob were involved in what appeared to be a multi level Necromunda game.

I assisted Mike with a Rebels and Patriots Napoleonic themed game that he ran for the benefit of Steves S and H and two of his friends who normally only play boardgames, and who had expressed an interest in getting more regular games in. The scenario was loosely based on Quatre Bras 16th June 1815 (appropriate given the anniversary was last week) using his newly completed 15mm collection. I helped with umpiring and supplied a few buildings for terrain.

We also had a visit from Dave C who kindly donated a book on the RAF fighter squadrons in the Battle of Britain, which is timely with the new game we have on the circuit.

Next week, Dave K is running another Mad Dogs with Guns game, while Mike and I are running a Lion Rampant Wars of the Roses themed game. We've found some period specific cards which will be in use, scenario to be decided.

11th March Games

Greetings


A decent turnout last night with two good games. Andy P ran his sci-fi skirmish game for the bulk of those present, while I set up a Napoleonic Rebels and Patriots game for Steves H & B, Mike and myself. The Scenario required the British to retain control of the hill and town, whilst the French had the option of taking control of either objective. Sadly time beat us in the end, but the game was most enjoyable and looked great.

 

 

Next week, Steve S has offered to run a sci-fi version of TUSK game. I've finally received my new WW1 aerial mat from tinywargames.co.uk and very nice it is to! I'll run a Wings of Glory game for interested parties - flying helmet and goggles essential, stick of wet celery optional.
