19th June Games

Greetings

Enough members in attendance last night to run three games: Rob and Andy P ran a Fallout game, Mark ran his planned Victorian Gothic Horror game for Steve S and Dave K, while I ran the promised Napoleonic naval game for Matt, Mike, Paul and Steve H. Planned as an outing for my recently acquired Spanish squadron, it is fair to say their first appearence in a game under my command did not go well with half the force forced to strike their colours. Better luck next time?

 

Next week, Paul, Mike and Steve H have agreed to trial the Osprey Gasland game and a Mad Dogs with Guns game has also been planned.

31st October Games

Greetings

No tricks last night, but a couple of treats - Mark ran his Victorian Gothic Horror game for Steve S, Andy P and Rob, but sadly I didn't have the chance to take more than a quick look as Steve H and I played The Men Who Would Be Kings, with a scenario set in the Sudan and featuring my newly refurbished British and Mahdist forces. Suffice to say that the British were unable to relieve the camp before it was overrun by the Mahdists. That said it was an interesting scenario (A sigh of relief for those of you who have the rules) and one to be revisited.
 

Next week, Andy P wants to run Rumbleslam again, whilst I have another TMWWBK scenario I'd like to try.

11th April Games

Greetings

Still a bit thin on the ground this week, but I was able to run a Poseidon's Warriors ancient naval game for Dave K, Mark and Steve H, while Steve S and Andy P played a Horror Wars (Victorian supernatural).

I've agreed to run a Dark Ages Lion Rampant game next week - any other offers to be advised, please.

As you're aware it's Salute at Excel in East London this coming Saturday. Although, we're not running a game I expect to see quite a few of you around and about, although, I would remind one and all that Chris, Graham and John are running a game under the league of Anti-Alchemists banner based on Garibaldi and the Italian Risorgimento.

21st March Games

Greetings

The return of warmer weather brought out a few more last night; as such we were able to run two games. Mark Ran his Victorian Horror game.

Whilst I ran the promised larger Bolt Action USSR game. I was primarily involved in the umpiring/rule interpretation of the USSR game - neither side was able to fulfil it's mission due to large numbers of pinned troops. Dave K's lousy dice luck continued, but he wasn't using my dice most of the game. Whilst not everybody agrees with the mechanics of the rules, the general feeling is they perhaps reflect the reality of small scale actions better than some other rules.

Next week, Dave K has offered to run a WW2 game using the successor rules to the above, which should provide a useful counterpoint to the recent games. I'll bring something else along as backup.

Following recent discussions, I'd like to hold a 'AGM' on Wednesday 25th April starting at about 8.15pm. I use inverted commas as the only matters requiring attention are the following:

• The partial refund of 2017 subscriptions due to our move from the Hockley Community Centre in June last year.
• The purchase of club polo shirts or badges for use at wargames shows.
• The nature of a possible club project for an exhibition game.

1st November Games

Greetings

A further change of plans this week, necessitated by Steve H not being able to run his Battle of Britain game. Steve S ran a fantasy horror game, whilst I allowed Chris and Josh to run riot in the Space Hulk scenario amusingly titled 'Suicide Mission', thereby keeping the seasonal mood going. Suffice to say the poor old marines were unable to complete their mission, although Josh was getting close during the 3rd run of the scenario we were able to get through.

Next week, Mark has offered to run his Barbarian Fantasy game - nothing else planned as yet, but hopefully Steve H will be available for some aerial antics? I'll look for a suitable backup game.

Note for your diaries - we have an invite for Cavalier 2018 and Tonbridge on 25/02/18. No decision on a game as yet, but I'll discuss this with you before an offer is sent.

4th October Games

Greetings

Bit thin on the ground this week, but we managed to run two games. Chris, Steve H and I tried out the amendments to missile fire discussed recently for Lion Rampant which appeared to work (and started another discussion about Wild Charges for Norman Cavalry!).

While Steve S, Mark and Andy P tried a Gothic Horror ruleset that Steve had found.

Next week , Andy has offered to run his Samurai game, whilst I will offer a pre-dreadnought naval action using the Portable Naval Wargames rules.

23rd November Games

Greetings

Better turnout this week - thanks to Mark for running his postponed Victorian Gothic Horror ame.

I ran a Star Wars X-Wing game for Josh and Steve S, allowing them to fly the TIE advanced and X-Wing fighters, while I lurked menacingly in my shiny new Imperial corvette; only kill of the evening fell to me courtesy of an errant X-Wing which strayed into range.

Next week; Andy P will run his Samurai game and Chris has agreed to run a Hordes of the Things game. I shan't be down as the car is dry docked for repairs; but Dave K and I have agreed to run the Tanks game again the following week.

15th June Games

Greetings

A better turnout last night; Mark ran his Gothic Horror game for most of those present – I believe the good guys may have won.... Uncertainty due to my efforts in running the play test of the quick play pre-WW1 naval rules I’ve been working on. The game ran OK, other than the fact that I botched the Italian deployment and got hammered as a result. Thanks to Steve H for assisting and to Rob and Wardy-la for playing.

Next week, Mark has offered to run his Retro Raygun sci-fi game, while others have offered to bring back up games. I’ll bring the new Airfix WW2 game I acquired at Sittingbourne, but haven’t as yet read the rules.

A reasonable turnout last night.

Mark ran his Victorian Gothic Horror game for most of the attendants.

 

While Josh and I indulged in a Dark Ages Lion's Rampant game which, while starting a little slow due to poor dice, resulted in a win for the Saxons when the Norse warlord failed a post-melee courage check and remembered an appointment elsewhere!

Next week I have offered to run a Wars of the Roses Lion's Rampant game and Mark says he will run a game too, probably Lord of the Rings.

My thanks to Mark for his Victorian Gothic Horror game which kept all concerned busy up to the last minute. I ran a Star Wars X-Wing game for Bob and Andy, and actually survived the game!

Next week I am offering Wing of War for some WW1 aviation action, while Dave and Steve S have offered board games.

6th May Games

Greetings

Two decent games last night; Mark ran his Victorian Gothic Horror game, while Alan and I had a Lion Rampant action set in the War of the Roses. Both games were enjoyable, and we had a visitor (hi Vic!) whom we will hopefully see again soon.

Next week Steve has offered to run a Wing of War WW1 game, and I feel the need for some Napoleonic naval action - currently seeking inspiration from the Sam Willis' title on the Glorious First of June 1794.

8th April Games

      A lower turnout than last week, but still enough to run two decent sized games. Andy H ran his Song of Blades and Heroes game again, I understand the difference between a moral victory and an overwhelming victory for the 'good guys' was a Minotaur waiting in ambush.

      While Mark ran his Gothic Horror game, which was another great little game, but one in which the intrepid heroes miserably failed in their mission.

Next week, Mark has offered to run LotR, whilst Neil and I are looking at X-Wing.

12th November Games

My thanks to Steve H for providing transport this week due to my car deciding to take another day off (all fixed now - hopefully), which allowed me to run the Napoleonic naval game I had promised. The scenario went well for a first run out, and will feature again with a couple of tweaks. 

Mark ran a Gothic Horror game which occupied the rest of those present.

I won't be down next week due to work commitments, but I believe Dave Kightly has offered to run one of his very popular zombie games.Any other offers would be appreciated, as would notification of games for the week after.  

Future news concerns the first bookings for 2015. I have received requests for the Cavalier show at Tonbridge on 22/2/15 and for the Broadside show at Sittingbourne in June. Both require responses in the near future. While I propose to take care of Broadside as usual, can we consider which games we might take to Tonbridge as a priority please? Any ideas please contact me direct.

26th Feb Games

Thanks to Dave Kightly for running his zombie game this Wednesday. Not sure how the survivors got on, but the game went to the wire for a decision. Picture of the game attached - plenty of zombies about but where are the live guys?

I was able to run a small Napoleonic naval game for the benefit of Ed and Mike, who are both new to my rules ( and in Mike's case, considering when and how to start work on a Dutch squadron as further opposition to my fleets). Plenty of manoeuvre and sufficient gunfire to inflict damage on both sides, but I think Ed and the British were ahead on points at close of play. This game was a joy to umpire, and gave me no small pleasure to see the rules and the ships in action. Picture attached at the height of the action.

Next week, we have a Lord of the Rings game lined up (Bob says he has some new figures to bring into play - don't know what though). I have offered to run a Space Hulk game using the most recent rules for some deep space mayhem. Cleanse and burn, brothers....

18th December Games

We had a better turnout than expected, given the pressures of the season and some particularly grotty weather late in the evening. Steve Slater kindly ran a Valley of the Dinosaurs board game. This allowed me to reprise my traditional Beast Master role for the Christmas game - suffice to say that I was able to spread a little misery around the various players during the course of the game. Steve accumulated the most loot but had no surviving characters to spend it with!

Dave Kightly ran a Zombiecide game for the remaining members present; I didn't get much time to look at this but those playing appeared to enjoy the game, which I suspect will be played again soon.

The next two Wednesdays will not see meetings due to Christmas and the New Year; our next scheduled meeting will be on Wednesday 8th January 2014. I look forward to seeing you then.

In the mean time, have a very Happy Christmas and may 2014 be a good year for us all.

6th November Games

A decent turnout last night. My Angels 20 game set over Finland during the Winter War was fast and bloody - attached picture shows the state of play after the first round of firing! Russians had the best of it but the game was enjoyed by all.

Mark's Victorian Gothic horror game is also illustrated; high angle picture was the best I could get unfortunately. This went to the wire but I think the good guys won....

Next week, Steve Slater has offered to run a Doctor Who game (appropriate given the 50th anniversary episode is to be broadcast soon) while I will bring the 1/1200 Napoleonic naval game along for a bit of nautical mayhem.

8th May Games

A fair turnout last night - Ernie arrival in Santa Claus mode, distributing largesse far and wide, certainly enhanced proceedings. Thanks to mark for his Victorian Gothic Horror game and also to Bob & co. for the Malifaux game, pictures attached. My Space Hulk game went ok (if not for the Deathwing) but sadly the pictures were a bit of a failure.

Next week, I propose to run an Angels 20 game for some of the members who haven't played the game yet. A Lord of the Rings game is also planned.

Quick reminder about the Fly In at Stow Maries Airfield this weekend. Steve Harbron and I will be in attendance with a Wings of War display, and we would welcome anybody who wants to turn up. There should also be some replica WW1 aircraft in attendance of the weather permits, so there is potential for a good day out. Better find my digital SLR camera.....
